DESCRIPTION:Sree Mallikarjuna Temple is one of the oldest and important tem
 ples in Kasaragod town\, dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Mallikarju
 na. Located in the heart of Kasaragod near the Taluk Office\, the temple h
 as a close association with the Kumbala River\, which flows to its south. 
 Kerala Tourism dates the present temple to the seventeenth century and rec
 ords that it was built by the Ikkeri kings to facilitate worship for warri
 ors brought from Karnataka. The temple complex includes the sreekovil\, na
 maskara mandapam\, chuttambalam\, valiya-balikkal and surrounding traditio
 nal structures\, while later renovations have contributed to its present a
 ppearance. According to temple legend\, the image of Lord Shiva is associa
 ted with Arjuna\, one of the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. The annual Varsh
 ika Mahotsavam is the temple’s principal festival and is traditionally h
 eld for five days during Meenam\, generally in March or April. The festiva
 l combines temple rituals with cultural programmes and is particularly not
 ed for Yakshagana\, the traditional dance-drama of the Karnataka and North
  Malabar cultural region. Kerala Tourism records the final day of the fest
 ival as the occasion for Yakshagana\, making the performance an important 
 part of the temple’s cultural identity. The temple premises also host ot
 her observances\, including Vinayaka Chaturthi\, which is celebrated annua
