## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Soorya Festival is a long-running annual cultural festival in Thiruvananthapuram, organised by the Soorya Stage and Film Society and known for bringing together a wide range of Indian performing and visual arts. Founded in 1977 by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, the festival was established with the aim of promoting Indian culture and has developed into an extensive programme encompassing dance, music, theatre, cinema, literature and visual arts. Kerala Tourism describes it as one of the longest and most prominent cultural events in India, while recent editions have continued to present programmes over several months rather than functioning as a conventional short-duration festival. The festival’s strength lies in its breadth: audiences can encounter classical dance traditions such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathak, Kuchipudi and Odissi alongside Kathakali, Carnatic and Hindustani music, theatre productions, film screenings, literary programmes, discussions and exhibitions. Recent editions have included dedicated series for Hindustani chamber music and Carnatic music, traditional dance festivals, national theatre programmes, Malayalam cinema showcases and art exhibitions. The 2024–25 edition, for example, included a Hindustani chamber series, the Sindhubhairavi Carnatic music festival, a traditional dance festival, a national drama festival, a Malayalam panorama film festival and an Indian Panorama programme, extending the festival calendar into January 2025. The 2025 programme likewise featured major classical music and dance presentations, including a Carnatic series with leading vocalists and instrumentalists. This evolving programme allows the Soorya Festival to serve both established artists and emerging performers while giving audiences opportunities to experience different Indian artistic traditions within one extended cultural season. The festival has also developed an international dimension through the activities of the Soorya Stage and Film Society, which has promoted Indian arts and cinema through programmes and chapters beyond Kerala. Rather than being confined to a single art form or venue, Soorya Festival uses different cultural spaces in Thiruvananthapuram according to the programme, with performances and events held at locations such as Thycaud Ganesham and other city venues. For visitors interested in classical dance festivals in Kerala, Carnatic and Hindustani music, theatre, Indian cinema and cultural events in Thiruvananthapuram, the Soorya Festival offers an unusually broad programme that connects traditional artistic heritage with contemporary presentation. Its long history and continuing programme make it a significant part of the cultural calendar of Kerala’s capital.
