## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Soorya Festival is a major annual cultural programme organised by the Soorya Stage and Film Society in Thiruvananthapuram, presenting an extensive range of Indian performing and visual arts. Founded by Soorya Krishnamoorthy, the festival has developed over several decades and is recognised by Kerala Tourism as one of the country’s longest-running cultural festivals. Rather than being limited to a single month or one artistic discipline, recent editions have extended across several months and included classical dance, music, theatre, cinema, literature, exhibitions, talks and workshops. The 2024 edition, for example, began in October and continued until January 2025, with programmes involving more than 2,000 artists. Its dance and music programmes have featured major Indian classical traditions including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi and Mohiniyattam, alongside Carnatic and Hindustani music. Theatre and cinema also form significant parts of the programme, with recent editions presenting a national drama festival and film festivals featuring works in Malayalam and other Indian languages. The festival also provides space for contemporary performance, choreography, literary discussion and other forms of artistic expression, allowing established artists and newer performers to share the same broad cultural platform. Kanakakkunnu Palace and its associated cultural spaces are among the important venues used for cultural events in Thiruvananthapuram, while Soorya programmes have also been presented at venues such as Tagore Theatre and other locations across the city. The festival’s long-running programme reflects its founding objective of promoting Indian arts and culture and encouraging cultural exchange through public performance. Its importance lies not only in the scale of its programme but also in the continuity it has maintained as a platform for music, dance, theatre, cinema, literature and related arts. Programme structure, dates, venues, participating artists and admission arrangements vary from one edition to another. Recent schedules have demonstrated that the festival cannot accurately be described simply as a month-long October event; its activities may continue well beyond October, with different sections scheduled across the subsequent months. For visitors interested in Kerala’s cultural life, the festival provides opportunities to encounter Indian classical and contemporary arts within Thiruvananthapuram’s established cultural venues. The current edition’s official programme should be checked for exact dates, venues and entry requirements before attending.
