About this event

Snooker Tournament is a monthly snooker meet at the snooker parlour in Punalur, the taluk town in Kollam. The title says tournament. Until the parlour says otherwise, read it as a meet: frames on the table, not a state ranking event. You should not travel on the assumption that a draw, a referee, and a trophy are waiting.

Snooker is played on a large table with fifteen reds and six colours: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black. A frame is won on points. In the standard game a red is one, yellow two, green three, brown four, blue five, pink six, and black seven. Players pot a red, then a colour. The colour is put back on its spot until the reds are gone. The colours are then potted in order, from yellow through to black. That is the ordinary game. It is not a local scoring twist, and it is not a claim that every night in the parlour is a formal cup. On a quiet Saturday the table may simply be hired for a friendly frame.

Ranking events have draws, referees, and eligibility rules. None of that is part of this meet unless the parlour announces it. If you need a handicap, a dress rule, or a seeded list, ask the parlour. Those things are not fixed here. Pool and billiards use different tables and different rules. This meet is snooker, on a snooker table, if that is the table the parlour puts you on.

Punalur's railway station is in the town, under a kilometre from the centre. The 1877 suspension bridge over the Kallada is the landmark people use to recognise Punalur. Neither the station nor the bridge is the parlour. You still have to ask which street the tables are on. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 83 kilometres away. Buses use the Punalur bus stand. Rooms named for the town are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. The meet is not in the hotel lounge.

The meet is on the last Saturday of the month. That Saturday can fall late in the month, from about the twenty-fifth onward. The parlour may be open on other evenings for ordinary play. Ordinary play is not the monthly meet. A table can also be booked for a private game that has nothing to do with the title.

Walk into the parlour and ask what the last Saturday actually is. A friendly frame charged by the hour and a formal cup with an entry are different evenings, and the parlour is the only place that can tell them apart. The station is close, under a kilometre from the centre of Punalur, which gets you into town and no further. You still need the street the tables are on. The 1877 bridge will not help you find the room. If you do not play, ask whether there is space to sit. A small parlour may have nowhere for an audience. A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel are beds, not tables.

Ask at the parlour whether the evening is a friendly frame or a formal tournament, how many tables are in use, and whether a table is charged by the hour or as an entry. Bring nothing on the assumption that cues are free, and do not assume a spectator seat if the room is small.
