DESCRIPTION:The Feast of St. Francis Xavier is observed in Christian commun
 ities across Kerala on December 3\, commemorating the Jesuit missionary wh
 o worked extensively in India and is especially associated with the early 
 Catholic missions along the western coast. Fort Kochi has a particularly s
 trong historical connection with the saint: St. Francis Xavier is traditio
 nally associated with visits to Kochi\, where he celebrated Mass\, while t
 he historic St. Francis Church remains one of the most important surviving
  monuments of the Portuguese period in the city. Founded in 1503\, the chu
 rch is recognised as one of the oldest European-built churches in India an
 d is closely connected with the maritime history of Fort Kochi. The presen
 t St. Francis Church is a CSI church and a protected heritage monument\, r
 ather than a Roman Catholic shrine dedicated to St. Francis Xavier\, but i
 ts history is closely intertwined with the Portuguese and Catholic presenc
 e in Kochi during the early colonial period. Celebrations associated with 
 St. Francis Xavier elsewhere in Kerala typically centre on Holy Mass\, nov
 ena prayers\, devotional gatherings and feast-day observances\, with the e
 xact programme determined by the individual parish or church. St. Francis 
 Xavier\, born in Navarre in 1506\, became one of the founding members of t
 he Society of Jesus and devoted much of his missionary life to Asia. He re
