About this place
The Shakthan Thampuran Palace in Thrissur is a significant heritage landmark associated with the former ruling dynasty of Kochi and one of the notable surviving examples of Kerala-Dutch architecture in the state. Formerly known as Vadakkechira Kovilakam, the palace was renovated in its present form in 1795 by Rama Varma Shakthan Thampuran, whose reign from 1790 to 1805 is regarded as an important period in the history of Kochi. The two-storeyed complex combines a traditional Kerala-style nalukettu with architectural features influenced by Dutch construction, including thick walls, broad doors and windows, high roofs and spacious interiors designed to remain relatively comfortable in Kerala’s climate. Italian marble floors and substantial wooden elements add to the character of the historic structure. Today, the palace houses the Sakthan Thampuran Archaeological Museum, which brings together collections illustrating the history, art and material culture of Kerala and the former Kochi kingdom. Its galleries include bronze, sculpture, epigraphy, numismatics, weapons and the history of Kochi. The bronze gallery contains sculptures dating from approximately the twelfth century onwards, while the sculpture gallery includes granite works from different periods, representing religious and artistic traditions from across Kerala. The museum’s numismatic collection presents ancient coins associated with Kerala and neighbouring regions, offering insights into trade and monetary history, while the epigraphy gallery introduces visitors to historical inscriptions and writing traditions. The weapons gallery displays arms associated with the former Kochi royal armoury and other historical sources, providing another perspective on the political and military history of the region. The rooms used by Shakthan Thampuran have also been preserved within the palace, connecting the museum collections with the life of the ruler himself. The palace grounds contain additional heritage features, including an archaeological garden displaying objects associated with the megalithic period, a heritage garden with indigenous plants and a traditional sarpakaavu, or sacred serpent grove. The final resting place of Shakthan Thampuran is also within the palace premises, along with the tombs of other prominent rulers. Managed by the Kerala Department of Archaeology, the protected monument offers a combined experience of architecture, archaeology, royal history and traditional culture. Its carefully preserved structure and diverse museum collections make the Shakthan Thampuran Palace an important destination for visitors interested in Thrissur’s historical and cultural heritage.
