About this place

Sasthamkotta Lake, in Kollam district, is Kerala’s largest freshwater lake and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, designated in 2002. Spread over about 373 hectares, the lake is spring-fed and surrounded by hills on most sides, with a bund separating its southern side from adjoining paddy fields. It is an important freshwater ecosystem as well as a significant source of drinking water for Kollam district, giving the wetland considerable ecological and social importance. A conservation-oriented walk around the lake provides an opportunity to understand this landscape through its water resources, wetland ecology, surrounding vegetation and relationship with nearby communities. The lake supports a variety of freshwater fish and wetland-associated flora and fauna, while Kerala Tourism also highlights opportunities for nature observation, scenic walks and birdwatching, with species such as cormorants and kingfishers among the birds that may be seen. The nearby Sastha Temple, an important pilgrimage centre, adds a cultural dimension to the landscape and gives Sasthamkotta its distinctive identity. The temple and its traditional setting are closely associated with the name of the village, while the presence of monkeys around the temple precinct is a familiar local feature. A conservation walk can therefore bring together the natural and cultural character of Sasthamkotta without treating the lake simply as a sightseeing location. Visitors can observe the changing character of the shoreline, learn about the importance of protecting freshwater resources and appreciate the relationship between the lake, agriculture and settlements in its surroundings. The Ramsar designation also underlines the need for responsible visitor behaviour and long-term conservation of the wetland. Walking quietly, avoiding litter, protecting vegetation and respecting local religious customs help preserve the character of the destination. The surrounding landscape of green hills, village settlements and agricultural areas further contributes to the experience, particularly during periods when the vegetation is lush. Sasthamkotta is thus suited to nature observation, environmental learning, photography and a calm exploration of one of Kerala’s most significant freshwater landscapes. A conservation-themed visit can encourage greater awareness of the lake’s role in sustaining both biodiversity and human communities while offering an opportunity to experience the ecological and cultural heritage of Kollam in a responsible manner.
