About this place

Sasthamkotta Lake Bird Watch is a general nature-watching experience centred on Sasthamkotta Lake, Kerala’s largest freshwater lake and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in Kollam district. Covering about 373 hectares, the lake is surrounded by hills on most sides and forms an important freshwater ecosystem within the district. It was designated a Ramsar site in 2002, recognising its ecological importance and the range of aquatic and wetland habitats it supports. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide suitable habitat for a variety of birds, including egrets, herons, bitterns and waders, making the area of interest to birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Recent wetland assessments have recorded at least 14 species of waterbirds at Sasthamkotta Lake, while Kerala Tourism also identifies the lake’s surroundings as a habitat for wetland birds. Birdwatching here is best approached as a quiet observation activity, with early morning offering suitable conditions for watching birds around the shoreline and adjoining wet areas. Depending on the season and local conditions, visitors may observe birds feeding, resting or moving between the lake and surrounding habitats. The lake also supports freshwater fish and other aquatic organisms, contributing to the ecological diversity of the wetland. Beyond its natural significance, Sasthamkotta has an important cultural landscape. The ancient Sree Dharma Sastha Temple stands beside the lake and is a major pilgrimage centre, while the temple surroundings are traditionally associated with bonnet macaques. The close relationship between the lake, temple and surrounding hills gives Sasthamkotta a distinctive cultural and environmental character. The lake is also an important source of drinking water for the Kollam region, making conservation of its water quality particularly significant. Visitors interested in birdwatching should maintain a respectful distance from birds, avoid loud noise and refrain from feeding or disturbing wildlife. Binoculars and cameras can be useful for observing birds without approaching them closely. Since the lake is a protected wetland of international importance, responsible visitation is especially important: littering, damaging vegetation and disturbing aquatic or terrestrial wildlife should be avoided. The surrounding landscape also offers opportunities for photography, nature observation and appreciation of Kerala’s freshwater ecosystems. Sasthamkotta Lake therefore provides more than a scenic waterside visit; it offers an opportunity to understand the ecological importance of freshwater wetlands while observing birds and other wildlife in a landscape closely connected with local religious and community life.
