## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Panchavadyam at Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, Sasthamkotta, represents one of Kerala’s distinctive temple-music traditions in the setting of an important Ayyappa shrine beside Sasthamkotta Lake. Panchavadyam, literally an ensemble of five instruments, is a traditional Kerala temple orchestra comprising thimila, maddalam, ilathalam, edakka and kombu. Kerala Tourism describes it as a regular accompaniment to temple festivals, religious ceremonies and processions, with a characteristic rhythmic structure in which the tempo progressively increases and the performance builds towards an energetic climax. At Sasthamkotta, such traditional percussion performances are associated with temple festivals and ceremonial occasions rather than constituting a separate annual festival under the name “Sasthamkotta Panchavadyam”. The Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is one of Kerala’s important ancient Sastha temples and is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. Its setting is particularly distinctive: the shrine stands beside Sasthamkotta Lake, Kerala’s largest freshwater lake and a Ramsar-listed wetland, while the temple precinct is known for the presence of monkeys traditionally associated with the shrine. The temple’s principal annual festival is a ten-day Utsavam held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, generally falling in February or March. The festival features temple rituals, processions and Kettukazhcha, with decorated elephants and traditional art forms forming part of the celebrations. Panchavadyam can accompany ceremonial processions and other auspicious temple occasions, adding a layered rhythmic dimension to the religious atmosphere. The ensemble’s distinctive progression, beginning with a measured rhythm and developing into increasingly complex and rapid cycles, is one of the features that makes Panchavadyam an important component of Kerala’s living temple-art tradition. The performance is not simply a concert in the modern sense; its traditional context is closely connected with ritual, processions and temple celebrations. Visitors attending a festival programme at Sasthamkotta may therefore encounter Panchavadyam alongside other forms of temple music and ceremonial activity, depending on the schedule arranged for that year. The temple’s association with the lake, its long-standing Sastha worship and its annual festival give the setting a distinctive combination of religious and cultural significance. For those interested in Kerala’s traditional performing arts, Panchavadyam at Sasthamkotta provides an opportunity to experience a classical temple ensemble within its customary devotional environment, while the wider festival offers a glimpse into the ritual and cultural traditions surrounding one of the state’s notable Dharma Sastha shrines
