Saraswati Pooja School Fest is the book-puja on Vijayadashami at the government school in Anchal, Kollam. It is a school observance for pupils and families. It is not a city carnival, and it is not a public stage on the road.

Vijayadashami is the tenth day after Navaratri. The date moves with the festival calendar. It is not the same civil day every year, so a date you remember from last year is only a guide. Saraswati is associated with learning. In many Kerala schools and Hindu homes, books are arranged, worshipped, and then taken up again for study. Children begin lessons. That beginning is vidyarambham.

A small child may trace the first letters in a tray of rice, with an elder guiding the hand. The letters are often the first syllables a child learns. Older pupils may simply open their books after the puja and read a line. The form differs from school to school. At this school the heart of the day is the books and the restart of lessons. It is not a talent show, and no outside stage is part of the day. No procession leaves the school unless the school itself adds one, and nothing here says that it does.
