About this place

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of Kerala’s most significant Christian heritage landmarks and one of the eight basilicas in India. Its history dates to the arrival of the Portuguese on the Malabar Coast, with permission granted to the first Portuguese viceroy, Dom Francisco de Almeida, to construct a church in Kochi in 1505. The foundation stone was laid on 3 May 1505, and the church was named Santa Cruz after the Holy Cross. The original structure experienced destruction and reconstruction during the successive colonial periods, and the present basilica was consecrated in 1905. In 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated the cathedral to the status of a basilica in recognition of its historical importance, artistic character, and religious significance. The present building is particularly notable for its Gothic and Indo-European architectural character, with two lofty spires and a striking white exterior contrasting with its pastel-coloured interior. Inside, visitors can admire richly decorated columns, frescoes, murals, large canvas paintings, and stained-glass windows. Among the most notable artworks are paintings associated with Italian artist Brother Antonio Moscheni and his disciple De Gama of Bangalore, including a representation of the Last Supper modelled on Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated composition. Paintings depicting the Passion and death of Christ further enrich the main altar and interior spaces, while the ceiling artwork illustrates episodes from the Via Crucis. The basilica also remains an active place of worship and serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin, linking its architectural heritage with a continuing religious tradition. Its history also reflects the changing colonial landscape of Fort Kochi: the church survived the Dutch conquest of 1663 but was destroyed during the British occupation in 1795 before being rebuilt in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Santa Cruz Basilica forms an important part of Fort Kochi’s historic landscape, alongside other landmarks that reflect the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and local influences that shaped the coastal settlement. Its combination of religious significance, historic architecture, paintings, and artistic craftsmanship makes it a notable destination for visitors exploring Kochi’s layered cultural heritage.
