## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Sabarimala pilgrimage season brings special arrangements for devotees passing through Aryankavu, an important Ayyappa pilgrimage centre in eastern Kollam. Aryankavu is home to the historic Aryankavu Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, one of the five important Sastha temples in Kerala and a shrine where Lord Ayyappa is worshipped as a young boy. Located amid the forested landscape near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, the temple and surrounding settlement form part of the wider pilgrimage network associated with Sabarimala. During the Mandala–Makaravilakku pilgrimage season, the movement of Ayyappa devotees through eastern Kerala increases considerably, and government authorities have included Aryankavu among the locations where free-food facilities are to be arranged for pilgrims. In November 2024, the Kerala Devaswom Minister announced that arrangements were being made to provide free food at Aryankavu, along with other important pilgrimage centres including Vandiperiyar, Kulathupuzha and Achankovil. Such annadanam initiatives reflect the longstanding tradition of offering food and hospitality to pilgrims during major religious journeys. Food distribution is generally organised through temple, Devaswom or community arrangements and may operate according to the requirements of the particular pilgrimage season. Aryankavu itself has a strong religious identity within the Ayyappa tradition. The official Sabarimala portal identifies the shrine as one of the five most important Ayyappa temples in Kerala and notes that its rituals follow Tamil traditions. The principal festivals associated with the temple include Pandiyan Mudippu, Trikkalyanam and Kumbhabhishekam, with the Trikkalyanam, or divine wedding, being a distinctive annual observance. The temple’s forest setting and location on the Thiruvananthapuram–Tenkasi National Highway make Aryankavu an important stopping point for pilgrims travelling through the region. Visitors during the pilgrimage season may therefore encounter a combination of temple worship, pilgrim activity and community service initiatives around the shrine. The annadanam facility should be understood as a seasonal pilgrim-service arrangement rather than a standalone cultural festival. Availability, serving hours and the exact location of food distribution can vary between pilgrimage seasons and should be confirmed locally before relying on the facility. The experience nevertheless reflects an important aspect of Kerala’s pilgrimage culture: communities and religious institutions coming together to support devotees travelling to sacred centres. For pilgrims passing through Aryankavu during the Sabarimala season, these service arrangements provide practical support while complementing the area’s long-established tradition of hospitality and devotional observance
