About this place

Rosemala is a forest settlement and eco-tourism destination associated with the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary in Kollam district, situated amid the southern Western Ghats and known for its forested hills, streams and views towards the Parappar Reservoir. Kerala Tourism describes Rosemala as a valley whose landscape resembles the petals of a rose when viewed from above; another local tradition associates its name with Roslin, the wife of a British planter who established an estate in the area. The locality therefore has a distinctive connection with the plantation history of the region as well as with the forests that now form part of the protected landscape. Rather than treating Rosemala primarily as an estate-house attraction, its heritage is best understood through the interaction between its former plantation landscape, forest settlement and present-day conservation setting. The surrounding Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1984 and covers about 171 square kilometres, protecting tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests and a rich variety of plant and animal life. The sanctuary is noted for species such as elephants, gaur, sambar, deer, Nilgiri langur and lion-tailed macaque, while its management records extensive diversity among birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and butterflies. Rosemala provides access to a number of nature-oriented experiences associated with the sanctuary, including forest walks, trekking programmes and visits to viewpoints overlooking the reservoir. Kerala Tourism also highlights Darbhakkulam, a pond situated within the Rosemala forest area, and the Rosemala watchtower, from which visitors can view the broad expanse of the Thenmala reservoir and surrounding hills. The forest journey itself is part of the experience, with mountain streams and dense vegetation accompanying the route into Rosemala. The area’s ecological importance means that visits are governed by forest-management requirements, and activities such as trekking, boating and camping are available only through designated programmes and subject to prevailing conditions. The sanctuary also forms an important part of the Kallada reservoir catchment, making conservation of its forests significant for water resources in the surrounding region. Rosemala consequently offers an opportunity to explore the intertwined histories of plantation activity, forest settlement, landscape and conservation in eastern Kollam, while its present character remains closely connected to the protected forests of Shendurney. Any heritage exhibition or programme specifically presented as “Rosemala Estate Heritage” should reflect the facilities and activities officially arranged at the site.

✈️ Airport: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the nearest major airport; Kerala Tourism lists it at about 53 km from the Shendurney sanctuary area.

🚌 Bus: Rosemala is reached by road through the forest region from the Aryankavu side. The final forest road is steep and winding; Kerala Tourism recommends arranging a jeep through the Forest Department for access to Rosemala.

🏨 Stay: Forest-based accommodation and camping programmes are available through Shendurney eco-tourism, including designated programmes associated with Rosemala and Pallivasal, subject to availability and forest regulations.

✅ Notes: Rosemala lies within the Shendurney forest landscape, so access and activities are regulated. Trekking, camping, boating and other eco-tourism programmes are subject to weather, forest conditions and programme availability.
