About this event
Revathi Pattathanam is an annual seven-day cultural and intellectual gathering associated with the historic Tali Mahadeva Temple in Kozhikode, Kerala, and is regarded as an important expression of the region’s long tradition of scholarship and learning. Held in the Malayalam month of Thulam, usually falling in October or November, the festival traces its origins to the period of the Zamorins, the rulers of medieval Kozhikode, under whose patronage the city developed as an important centre of learning and culture. The gathering traditionally brought together scholars who engaged in intellectual discussions and debates, particularly in the fields of Vedic learning, Sanskrit and related branches of knowledge. The festival continues this scholarly tradition through debates, discussions and ceremonial recognition of accomplished scholars. On the concluding day, selected scholars are traditionally honoured with the title Bhatta and a monetary award known as panakizhi, reflecting the historic practice of rewarding academic excellence. Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, the renowned Sanskrit scholar and author of the Narayaneeyam, is among the distinguished scholars traditionally associated with the festival’s history. Kerala Tourism records that Revathi Pattathanam was instituted by the Zamorin as a form of penance following the execution of Namboothiris who had resisted the ruler’s takeover of the temple, although this account belongs to the historical traditions associated with the festival. The Tali Mahadeva Temple itself is an important example of Kerala temple architecture, with a sanctum featuring a distinctive chariot-shaped design, elaborate brass work, wooden elements, mural paintings and granite sculptures. The temple dates to the 14th century and became particularly prominent under the Zamorins. Revathi Pattathanam gives this historic setting a distinctive intellectual character, bringing together religious tradition, scholarship and cultural heritage rather than focusing solely on ritual celebration. The festival also reflects the historical importance attached to education and scholarly debate in Kozhikode, where the Zamorin court supported intellectual activity and learning. Today, the event remains a significant part of Kozhikode’s cultural calendar and provides an opportunity to experience a traditional form of scholarly assembly rooted in Kerala’s history. Visitors interested in Sanskrit studies, Indian intellectual traditions, temple culture and the history of the Zamorins can find particular cultural value in the festival and its setting at Tali Mahadeva Temple.
