About this event
Rakkuli Thirunal is the traditional name associated with the Feast of Denha, or Epiphany, observed by the Saint Thomas Christian community of Kerala. The best-known celebration under this name is held at St Thomas Cathedral Church in Pala, Kottayam district, with the principal feast observed on 6 January. The Syriac term Denha refers to manifestation or revelation and, in the Christian liturgical tradition of Kerala, the feast commemorates the manifestation of Christ and the baptism of Jesus. The name Rakkuli is connected with an older custom of taking a ritual bath in a nearby river or water body on the eve of the feast; the practice gave rise to the expression Rakkuli, commonly understood in connection with a nocturnal or night bath. At Pala, the celebration forms part of a wider period of church festivities extending around the feast day and includes religious observances, processions and cultural programmes. The festival has also traditionally been associated with a fair that attracts visitors and pilgrims from different parts of Kerala. At St Thomas Cathedral, the programme has included the presentation of Sisuvadha, a dramatic enactment concerning the massacre of infants associated with the Biblical story of King Herod, on the night of 5 January, followed by the Mala Unthu procession on 6 January. The celebrations therefore bring together liturgical devotion, local custom, community participation and cultural expression. Rakkuli Thirunal is also part of a broader Kerala Christian tradition in which the Feast of Denha has regional forms and names. In northern parts of Kerala, the corresponding observance is commonly known as Pindikuthi Perunnal, associated with the practice of decorating a plantain stem with lamps and carrying or displaying lights as a symbol of Christ as the light of the world. In southern parts, the name Rakkuli is associated with the ritual bath connected with the feast. At Pala, the observance remains closely linked with St Thomas Cathedral and the local Christian community, making it an important expression of the religious and cultural heritage of central Kerala. Visitors attending the celebration should remember that its central character is religious and devotional, even though the associated processions, performances and fair create a wider community festival atmosphere.
