## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral, Puthiyacavu, popularly known as Puthiyacavu Palli, is one of the historically significant centres of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian tradition in Mavelikara, Alappuzha district, Kerala. The cathedral is associated with the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and is recognised in church records as Mavelikkara Puthiyacavu St. Mary’s Cathedral. The church is traditionally dated to AD 943, a date widely associated with its foundation and making it an important landmark in the Christian heritage of central Travancore. Its historical importance extends beyond religious worship because Puthiyacavu became associated with the Mavelikara Padiyola, a significant declaration in the history of the Malankara Church. On 16 January 1836, Metropolitan Dionysius IV of Cheppad convened the historic gathering at Mavelikara in response to growing Anglican missionary influence and questions concerning the traditions and administration of the Malankara Church. The declaration affirmed the church’s connection with its Syrian ecclesiastical traditions and became an important episode in the subsequent development of the Malankara Orthodox tradition. The Mavelikara Padiyola consequently gives Puthiyacavu an important place in Kerala’s ecclesiastical history, particularly in discussions surrounding the relationship between the Malankara Church and Anglican missionary influence during the nineteenth century. Today, the cathedral continues to function as an active place of Christian worship and community life rather than simply as a historical monument. It is connected with the Mavelikara Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, and official church records identify the Puthiyacavu St. Mary’s Cathedral among the diocese’s parishes. Regular worship, parish activities, community programmes, and diocesan functions contribute to the cathedral’s continuing role in the religious life of Mavelikara. The surrounding Puthiyacavu area also reflects the broader Christian heritage of the town, where churches, educational institutions, and community organisations have developed alongside Mavelikara’s historic religious landscape. The cathedral’s heritage significance therefore comes from the combination of long-standing Christian worship, ecclesiastical history, community traditions, and its association with the 1836 Mavelikara Padiyola. For heritage travellers, the site offers an opportunity to understand an important chapter in Kerala’s Syrian Christian history and the development of the Malankara Church. However, the cathedral should not be treated simply as a tourist attraction; it remains an active place of worship, and visitors should respect ongoing religious services and local customs. There is no verified 2026 date for a separate public heritage event officially titled “St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral Puthiyacavu Heritage” or similar. If the cathedral or the Mavelikara Diocese announces a special anniversary programme, historical exhibition, church feast, cultural event, or heritage-related observance during 2026, the confirmed schedule should be obtained from the church or diocesan authorities and their official announcements. As of the latest information available, no specific 2026 date has been officially identified for a standalone heritage event at the cathedral; therefore, the date should be considered not announced rather than estimated. Visitors planning a visit should verify worship timings, special programmes, and access arrangements directly through official church or diocesan channels before travelling. With its traditional name Puthiyacavu Palli, its association with the AD 943 foundation tradition, and its historic connection with the Mavelikara Padiyola of 16 January 1836, St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral remains an important part of Mavelikara’s religious and historical landscape and represents the continuing heritage of Kerala’s ancient Malankara Christian community.
