About this event
Punalur Sangeetha Sabha Concert is a Carnatic vocal recital at the town hall in Punalur, Kollam. A sabha concert is an evening of classical music. There is a singer, the usual accompaniment, and an audience that has come to listen. You sit through the recital. It is not background music for a fair.
The usual support is violin and mridangam. The violin follows the voice. The mridangam is the principal drum. A ghatam, which is a clay pot played with the hands, or a kanjira, which is a small frame drum, is sometimes added. The recital is vocal, so not every one of those instruments is guaranteed. You may see a singer and two accompanists, or a fuller group. In a typical evening the singer presents compositions and, in the main part, improvises inside a raga and a tala. A raga is the melodic frame. A tala is the cycle of beats. You may hear an alapana, which is a slow opening of the raga without the composition's words, then a composition, and later a percussion solo while the singer rests. That shape is how many sabha evenings go. No raga, composer, or kriti is fixed in advance, so a request for one song is not part of the plan.
The artists are touring artists. They are not a resident company of the hall. No name is billed here. When the sabha prints a name, that name is who you will hear. Until then, do not travel for a particular musician.
Punalur's 1877 suspension bridge over the Kallada is the town landmark. The concert is in the town hall, not on the bridge. The railway station is in town, under a kilometre from the centre, and it is how many people arrive. It is not the venue. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 83 kilometres away. Buses use the Punalur bus stand. Rooms named for the town are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel.
The recital is on the second Saturday of the month. One Saturday, and the date moves. The hall may be booked for something else. Carnatic concerts ask for a quiet room. Phones and conversation sit badly against a raga. Follow whatever the sabha asks of the audience.
Give the recital the quiet it is built for. An alapana is unhurried, and a phone is loud against it. Violin and mridangam are what you should expect to see. A ghatam or a kanjira is a bonus if the artists have brought one. No kriti is promised, so a favourite composition is a hope, not a programme note. The second Saturday changes its civil date every month. Confirm it with the sabha, and confirm the names only when the sabha has printed them. The town hall is a short way from the station, which sits under a kilometre from the centre. The 1877 bridge is a landmark on the way, not a venue. Ask about entry before you assume the door is open.
Touring artists leave when the evening ends. The hall does not keep a resident company you can hear the next week. A tala cycle and a raga are the frame of the music. You do not need to name them to sit quietly and listen. You do need the sabha's word on whether that second Saturday is still free, because the town hall has other bookings.
Ask which Saturday, which artists, which instruments will be on stage, and whether the hall is charging for entry. A month of Saturdays is not a festival of concerts.
