## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Punalur Railway Station is an important railway landmark in eastern Kollam and forms part of the historic railway corridor connecting Kollam with the Western Ghats and Sengottai in Tamil Nadu. The station lies on the Punalur–Sengottai section of the Southern Railway network, a route noted for its mountainous terrain, bridges, tunnels and engineering works associated with crossing the Western Ghats. The Kollam–Punalur broad-gauge section was opened to passenger traffic in 2010, while the remaining Punalur–Sengottai sections were subsequently converted and reopened in stages, with Edaman–Punalur completed in 2017 and New Aryankavu–Edaman completed in 2018. Punalur itself has a long association with transport, trade and industrial development in the eastern part of Kollam district, and the railway contributed significantly to the town's regional connectivity. A heritage-oriented visit to the station can be combined with an appreciation of the wider railway landscape and the historic structures associated with Punalur. The town's most prominent surviving engineering landmark is the Punalur Suspension Bridge over the Kallada River. Built between 1871 and 1877 under the supervision of British engineer Albert Henry during the reign of Travancore Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma, the bridge is constructed using iron, wood and masonry and is now a protected monument open to pedestrians. Together, the railway station and the suspension bridge reflect different aspects of Punalur's nineteenth- and twentieth-century development, when improved transport infrastructure helped strengthen connections between the plains, the eastern hills and neighbouring regions. The railway corridor is particularly notable for the dramatic transition in landscape as it approaches the Western Ghats, with forests, hills and valleys forming the backdrop to the line. The station itself remains a functioning railway facility rather than a dedicated museum or organized heritage-tour venue, so visitors should approach it as part of the town's living transport heritage. Railway operations take priority, and access to operational areas is restricted. The wider Punalur area offers additional opportunities to explore the town's historical and natural character, including the Kallada River and the protected suspension bridge. For visitors interested in Kerala's railway history, colonial-era engineering and the evolution of transport in the eastern part of the state, Punalur provides a useful setting in which these strands of regional history can be understood together
