Punalur 5K Run is a community road run of five kilometres on a town route in Punalur, the taluk town in Kollam. Five kilometres is long enough to be a real run and short enough that many community events let people walk part of it. Whether walking is welcome, and whether the course is officially measured, depends on the people holding the run. The number in the title is the distance they are aiming at. It is not a certificate that the road has been measured with a wheel.

A community run is a mass start for local people. Everyone begins together rather than in a staggered elite field. A shared start does not by itself mean chip timing, a finish gantry, or a results list. Those belong to races that have been equipped for them. No prize list is fixed here, and no age group is fixed here. Children, adults, and older people may all be in the same crowd, or the organisers may split them. You will know only when they say so. This 5K is not a half marathon held somewhere else in Kerala. A half marathon is 21.1 kilometres. Do not train for that distance because of this title.

Punalur railway station is in town, under a kilometre from the centre. The 1877 suspension bridge crosses the Kallada River. Both are landmarks. Neither is the start line unless the organisers say so. The town route is a course they publish, not a guess through the market. Do not invent a loop past the bridge and call it the run. Roads stay open to ordinary traffic unless someone has permission to hold them. You run where you are told, and you do not assume the street is closed.

The run is on the first Sunday of the month. That is one morning, not every Sunday, and not a training group on weekdays. Rain, a festival, or a ground already booked can move it. No bib design, no T-shirt, and no fee are stated. If a fee exists, the organisers will say so.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 83 kilometres from Punalur. Buses use the Punalur bus stand. Rooms named for the town are A One Hotel, Hotel Panacea Ventures, and Shaji Hotel. None of them is the start.

Treat five kilometres as the distance in the title, and then ask whether the road you will use has been measured. Community runs sometimes let people walk. Ask if this one does before you promise a child, or yourself, that walking is welcome. The first Sunday is one morning. A training jog on the bridge on a weekday is not the run. The station and the 1877 bridge are useful for finding Punalur, under a kilometre from the centre in the case of the station. They become the start only when a person with authority puts the start there. If a fee or a bib exists, it will be in that same local answer, not in this account. The town hotels are for sleep.

Mass start means everyone the organisers have allowed goes off together. It does not mean a clock, a result sheet, or an age category. If you need those, ask, and stay at home if the answer is no. The town route is theirs to publish. A guess past the market is a private run on an open road.

Ask in Punalur where the start and finish are, whether a bib or a fee is used, and whether the run is timed. Turn up only when someone can point at the road you are meant to use.
