## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Puliyarmala Jain Temple, also known as Ananthanatha Swami Temple, is a Jain place of worship at Puliyar Mala, about 5 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad district. Dedicated to Ananthanatha Swami, the 14th Jain Tirthankara, the temple represents the continuing Jain heritage of Wayanad and the historical presence of Jain communities in the region. Kerala Tourism records that the shrine was originally situated at Kalpetta, formerly known as Kalpavathy, and was shifted to the Puliyar Mala hillock by Mandappa Gowder in 1931. Set on a small hillock surrounded by coffee plantations, the temple has a distinctly peaceful setting within Wayanad’s green landscape. Its architecture follows a traditional Dravidian style, with carved entrance doors, a large granite pillar near the main gate and an ornate stupa among the features noted by Kerala Tourism. Stone carvings of Mahavira and other Jain images and symbols further reflect the religious character of the shrine. The temple is part of a wider Jain heritage in Wayanad, where Jain migration and settlement played an important role in the region’s historical development. Kerala Tourism records that Jain influence in the area dates back centuries and that the community was historically associated with trade and the cultivation of cash crops. The Puliyarmala shrine continues to provide a place for Jain worship while also attracting visitors interested in the religious and architectural history of Wayanad. Its relatively modest scale and hilltop setting distinguish it from the larger temple complexes found elsewhere in Kerala, while the carved stonework and traditional design provide an opportunity to appreciate the region’s layered cultural history. The temple should not be confused with the Bathery Jain Temple at Sulthan Bathery, another important Jain heritage site in Wayanad that dates to the 13th century and is now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The Puliyarmala temple has its own separate history and remains an active Jain place of worship. For visitors exploring Wayanad’s religious diversity, the Ananthanatha Swami Temple offers an insight into a lesser-known aspect of the district’s heritage, combining Jain devotional traditions, traditional architecture and the distinctive landscape around Kalpetta. Its importance lies not in monumental scale but in the continuity of Jain worship and the evidence it provides of the region’s long and diverse religious history.
