About this place

The SPIC MACAY Baithak – Hindustani Classical Music Sessions are intimate and educational classical music gatherings organized by SPIC MACAY as part of its nationwide mission to preserve, promote, and introduce India's rich classical and traditional performing arts to students and young audiences. Inspired by the historic baithak tradition, these sessions recreate the authentic atmosphere in which Indian classical music was originally experienced—within small, informal gatherings where musicians and listeners sit close together, allowing for a deeply personal and immersive artistic experience. Unlike large auditorium concerts, a baithak emphasizes attentive listening, meaningful interaction, and appreciation of the finer nuances of Indian classical music. Through these programmes, SPIC MACAY seeks to bridge the gap between legendary artists and younger generations by creating opportunities for direct engagement, artistic dialogue, and cultural learning. The Hindustani Classical Music Sessions feature performances by eminent maestros, senior musicians, accomplished accompanists, and emerging artists who present the rich traditions of Hindustani classical music in their purest form. Vocal recitals often include Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, Tarana, Thumri, Dadra, Bhajans, semi-classical compositions, devotional music, and elaborate raga-based improvisations, while instrumental performances showcase the expressive beauty of traditional Indian instruments such as the Sitar, Sarod, Santoor, Sarangi, Bansuri (flute), Violin, Harmonium, Tabla, Pakhawaj, and Tanpura. Artists gradually unfold ragas through alap, jor, jhala, taans, bol-alap, bol-taan, layakari (rhythmic improvisation), and intricate melodic development, enabling audiences to experience the emotional depth, technical brilliance, and meditative qualities that define Hindustani classical music. Because the audience is intentionally limited in size, listeners can closely observe the interaction between the lead artist and accompanying musicians, gaining valuable insight into improvisation, rhythm, melody, and performance aesthetics that are often difficult to appreciate in larger concert settings. One of the defining characteristics of SPIC MACAY Baithaks is the educational interaction between artists and audiences. Many sessions include lecture demonstrations, artist interactions, question-and-answer sessions, discussions on ragas and talas, introductions to different gharanas (musical traditions), and conversations about the philosophy, history, discipline, and evolution of Indian classical music. These interactive elements encourage students to ask questions, understand the cultural significance of the performances, and appreciate the lifelong dedication required to master classical music. The baithak format also reflects the traditional guru-shishya parampara, fostering an atmosphere of respect, curiosity, and shared learning. SPIC MACAY frequently organizes these sessions in schools, colleges, universities, educational institutions, cultural centres, heritage buildings, community halls, auditoriums, and other suitable venues, allowing students from diverse academic backgrounds to experience classical music outside conventional classroom settings. The simple stage arrangements, absence of elaborate theatrical effects, and emphasis on direct musical communication preserve the authenticity of the traditional baithak experience while encouraging focused listening and artistic appreciation. SPIC MACAY does not maintain a permanent, standalone physical office in Thiruvananthapuram. Instead, the organization functions through volunteer-led chapters and institutional coordinators. In Thiruvananthapuram, SPIC MACAY's activities are primarily coordinated through active chapters at institutions such as the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET) and the University of Kerala, where faculty members, student volunteers, and regional coordinators organize classical music, dance, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and cultural outreach programmes. Consequently, SPIC MACAY Baithak – Hindustani Classical Music Sessions may be conducted at different educational institutions, auditoriums, cultural venues, or partner organizations depending on the hosting chapter and programme schedule, rather than at a dedicated SPIC MACAY venue. Beyond the performances themselves, these sessions inspire young people to explore India's cultural heritage, develop refined listening skills, and recognize the value of preserving traditional performing arts in contemporary society. By bringing internationally acclaimed musicians into educational institutions, SPIC MACAY creates meaningful cultural experiences that enrich students intellectually, artistically, and spiritually. The SPIC MACAY Baithak – Hindustani Classical Music Sessions do not represent a single officially designated or permanently scheduled annual event, but instead comprise numerous baithaks organized throughout the year by…
