About this event

Pookkalam Contest Anchal celebrates the traditional floral art associated with Onam, bringing the festive spirit of Kerala into a creative setting through the making of colourful floral carpets. Pookkalam, also known as Athapookkalam, is an important Onam tradition in which fresh flowers and other natural materials are arranged on the ground in circular and decorative patterns. Closely associated with the legend of King Mahabali and the annual celebration of his homecoming, the tradition has become a distinctive expression of Kerala’s festive culture, creativity and community participation. A pookkalam can range from relatively simple arrangements to elaborate compositions built from flowers of different colours, shapes and textures. Traditional designs often use concentric circles, geometric forms, floral motifs and other decorative patterns, while contemporary competitions may encourage participants to explore thematic and imaginative interpretations. The process requires planning, colour selection, careful placement and teamwork, with participants working together to shape the design and refine its details. Fresh flowers such as marigold, chrysanthemum, rose and other locally available varieties are commonly used for their contrasting colours, while leaves and other natural elements may complement the arrangement depending on the rules of a particular competition. The artistic value of a pookkalam lies not only in its finished appearance but also in the care, coordination and creativity involved in creating it. Pookkalam competitions are therefore an engaging way of experiencing one of Kerala’s most recognisable Onam customs, particularly for families, students, community groups and visitors interested in local cultural traditions. The wider Onam season is also associated with traditional performances, games, music, festive gatherings and the wearing of Kerala’s traditional attire, although accompanying programmes vary according to the organiser and venue. Pookkalam-making continues to connect generations with the cultural practices of Onam while allowing participants to reinterpret a familiar tradition through artistic expression. At Anchal, a pookkalam contest offers an opportunity to appreciate the colour, craftsmanship and collaborative spirit behind this enduring element of Kerala’s festive heritage.
