## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The annual Nercha at Ponnani Juma Masjid is a significant religious observance associated with the historic mosque at Ponnani in Malappuram district, a town long recognised for its Islamic scholarship, maritime connections and distinctive cultural traditions. The mosque, commonly known as Jama-at Mosque, is believed to date to the 15th century and is closely associated with Ponnani’s emergence as an important centre of Islamic learning on the Malabar Coast. Kerala Tourism describes the mosque as a major Muslim pilgrimage centre and notes that its annual four-day Nercha is held in March or April. The celebration brings devotees to the mosque for religious observances and remembrance, reflecting the deep connection between the shrine, the local Muslim community and Ponnani’s centuries-old religious heritage. The mosque itself is notable for its traditional Kerala architectural character and for the mausoleum of the Malappuram Shaheeds located beside it. The martyrs are commemorated in Mappila songs and traditions, adding an important historical and cultural dimension to the site. Ponnani’s reputation as the “Mecca of the East” developed from its significance as a centre of Islamic scholarship, with religious teachers and students historically gathering here from different parts of the Malabar region. The town also played an important role in maritime trade and in cultural exchanges with Arab communities, influences that contributed to the development of Arabi-Malayalam, a form of Malayalam written in Arabic script. During the Nercha, the mosque and surrounding locality become focal points for communal religious activity, bringing together worshippers and visitors in an atmosphere centred on faith, remembrance and fellowship. The celebration is rooted in local religious tradition rather than being a conventional tourism festival, and the mosque remains an active place of worship. Visitors should therefore respect religious practices, dress appropriately and follow instructions from mosque authorities and organisers. The historic relationship between the mosque, nearby religious institutions and the wider Ponnani community also reflects the town’s longstanding tradition of cultural interaction. The nearby Thrikkavu Temple, for example, stands close to the mosque and forms part of Ponnani’s distinctive religious landscape. Beyond the festival itself, the surrounding town offers opportunities to explore Ponnani’s Islamic heritage, traditional architecture, waterways and coastal culture. The annual Nercha thus provides a window into the religious history and living cultural traditions of Ponnani, while the mosque remains an important landmark in Kerala’s Islamic heritage.
