About this place
PhotoMuse – The Museum of Photography in Thrissur district is India’s first public museum dedicated to the art, history and science of photography. Established by the Better Art Foundation and founded by Dr. Unnikrishnan Pulikkal, PhotoMuse was created to preserve photographic heritage while encouraging education, creative practice and wider appreciation of photography as an art form and historical record. The museum is located at Chungal, Mattathur, near Kodakara, in its own purpose-built facility, where its collection brings together cameras, photographic equipment and other objects connected with the development of photographic technology. PhotoMuse’s work extends beyond preserving historic cameras and photographs: it seeks to document, interpret and promote photography as a means of understanding natural and cultural heritage. Its collection includes vintage and later-generation cameras, with individual objects in the collection documented through the museum’s online catalogue. Exhibitions and programmes at PhotoMuse cover diverse aspects of photography, including contemporary photographic practice, nature and wildlife photography, visual culture and photographic history. The museum also functions as a creative and educational platform, organising exhibitions, photography competitions, workshops, camps, lectures and other programmes for photographers, students, enthusiasts and members of the public. Its changing exhibition programme gives visitors opportunities to encounter different photographic approaches and perspectives rather than relying solely on a permanent historical display. PhotoMuse has also developed a wider community around photography, supporting interaction between photographers and audiences and promoting photography education through outreach activities. The institution’s location in the rural setting of Mattathur provides a different experience from a conventional city museum, while its proximity to Kodakara and other parts of central Kerala makes it accessible as part of a broader Thrissur district itinerary. For photography enthusiasts, artists, students, researchers and travellers interested in visual heritage, PhotoMuse provides an unusual opportunity to explore how cameras, photographic processes and images have evolved over time. Visitors can also follow the museum’s current exhibition and event calendar, which regularly features new photography displays and educational activities. The museum is currently open Tuesday through Sunday, with Monday observed as a weekly holiday, although visitors should confirm the latest arrangements before travelling. With its specialised collection, public educational mission and continuing programme of exhibitions and photography-related activities, PhotoMuse has established itself as an important centre for photographic heritage and contemporary visual culture in Kerala.
