About this place
Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady offers an immersive rafting experience through the forested landscapes of one of Kerala’s most important protected areas. The official eco-tourism programme is bamboo rafting, which combines trekking through the reserve with rafting on the waters of Periyar Lake rather than a conventional white-water rafting trip through river rapids. The programme takes visitors through different forest habitats before they board specially constructed bamboo rafts, providing a quiet way to experience the reserve’s scenery and biodiversity from the water. During the rafting section, forest-covered hills and the surrounding landscape are reflected on the lake, while wildlife such as elephants, gaur and sambar deer may sometimes be seen near the water’s edge. Birdwatching is also an important part of the experience, with the reserve supporting a rich variety of avian species and other wildlife. The full-day programme includes several hours of trekking followed by approximately three hours of rafting, with trained guides and an armed forest guard accompanying participants. A shorter half-day bamboo rafting programme is also offered, combining three to four hours of trekking with about one hour of rafting. The activity forms part of the community-based eco-tourism programmes of Periyar Tiger Reserve and is designed to allow visitors to experience the forest while supporting conservation and forest-dependent communities. Participants must follow the instructions of guides and reserve staff and wear life jackets during the rafting section. Wildlife sightings are possible but are not guaranteed, and visitors are expected to maintain appropriate behaviour within the protected area. The rafting takes place on the placid waters of Periyar Lake, created following the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam, rather than on a section of the Periyar River characterized by white-water rapids. The surrounding reserve is renowned for its evergreen and deciduous forests, diverse wildlife and scenic Western Ghats landscape. The experience is particularly suited to nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and travellers looking for a combination of trekking and water-based exploration. Visitors can choose between full-day and half-day programmes according to availability and the current schedule. Because the activity operates inside a protected tiger reserve, participation is subject to the rules, schedules and entry requirements established by the reserve authorities
