## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Bamboo rafting in Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, is a guided forest-and-lake ecotourism programme that combines trekking through protected forest with a slow journey on bamboo rafts across the calm waters of Periyar Lake. The experience is designed as a daytime nature activity rather than a nocturnal rafting excursion. The official Periyar Tiger Reserve currently lists both half-day and full-day bamboo-rafting programmes, with the half-day option operating in morning and late-morning slots and combining several hours of trekking with about an hour of rafting. The full-day programme begins at the boat landing and involves a longer trek through different forest habitats before participants board bamboo rafts for approximately three hours, returning to the boat landing by the evening. From the raft, visitors can observe the forested hills surrounding the lake and may encounter wildlife along the shoreline. Elephants, gaur and sambar are among the larger animals that may be seen, while the forest also supports numerous birds and arboreal species such as the Nilgiri langur and Malabar giant squirrel. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, and the reserve specifically advises visitors to be patient and allow animals priority in their natural environment. The programmes are protection-oriented and community-based, with trained guides and forest personnel accompanying participants. The full-day programme is limited to a maximum of 10 tourists and is accompanied by an armed forest guard and four guides, while life jackets are mandatory during the rafting section. The reserve’s published rules also require visitors to respect the wilderness, avoid littering, refrain from disturbing wildlife and follow staff instructions. The experience therefore combines recreation with conservation awareness and support for forest-dependent communities involved in the reserve’s ecotourism programmes. The quiet pace of bamboo rafting allows visitors to appreciate the lake, forest margins and surrounding hills without the speed associated with conventional adventure rafting. It is particularly suited to visitors interested in observing nature and experiencing the protected landscape under the guidance of people familiar with the reserve. The officially listed bamboo-rafting programmes are not conducted at night, and the reserve’s current programme catalogue separately lists night trekking activities such as Jungle Scout at designated forest locations. Visitors seeking a night-time wildlife experience should therefore choose one of the reserve’s authorised night programmes rather than expecting bamboo rafting after dark
