## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Bamboo rafting in the Periyar Tiger Reserve at Thekkady combines a guided forest trek with a quiet journey across the waters of Periyar Lake, offering a distinctive way to experience the reserve’s forests and wildlife. Rather than being a standalone river-rafting activity, the official programme is a conservation-oriented trekking and rafting experience that takes visitors through some of the richest forest tracts of the reserve before they board specially made bamboo rafts. The forest section passes through a mosaic of habitats supporting a wide variety of birds, butterflies and mammals, while the rafting portion provides broad views of forest-covered hills reflected in the calm waters of the lake. Wildlife sightings are possible along the water’s edge, with elephants, gaur and sambar among the animals that may be observed, while giant squirrels, Nilgiri langurs and numerous bird species are also associated with the surrounding forests. Sightings are naturally dependent on chance and visitors are expected to remain patient and follow the instructions of the guides and forest staff. The full-day programme begins at the boat landing and involves several hours of trekking before the rafting section, which lasts about three hours. A half-day version is also available, combining approximately three to four hours of trekking with about an hour of rafting. The experience is conducted under the supervision of guides and forest protection staff; the full-day programme currently lists one armed forest guard and four guides for a maximum group of 10 participants. Life jackets are mandatory during the rafting portion, and participants must follow reserve regulations, including restrictions on littering, firearms and inflammable materials. The programme is part of Periyar’s community-based ecotourism initiatives, which involve forest-dependent communities in tourism and conservation activities. The surrounding Periyar landscape forms part of the southern Western Ghats and is protected as the Periyar Tiger Reserve, a major habitat for diverse flora and fauna. The bamboo raft moves quietly across the lake, allowing visitors to observe the forest edge without the speed or noise associated with motorised adventure activities. Because the experience combines a substantial forest walk with rafting, it is better suited to visitors who are comfortable spending several hours outdoors than to those seeking a short recreational boat ride. The official reserve currently offers both full-day and half-day bamboo-rafting programmes, with specific age, timing and participation requirements applying to the different options.
