## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Peringottukara Devasthanam Sree Vishnumaya Swami Temple is a Vishnumaya shrine on the Kanjany–Peringottukara Road at Kizhakkummuri, Peringottukara, in Thrissur district, Kerala 680571, near Peringottukara Palace. The Devasthanam describes the worship here as a tradition of about four centuries and presents this temple as its own seat, separate from the other Vishnumaya shrines in the same village. The presiding deity is Sree Vishnumaya, understood as the divine child of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and also worshipped in the form associated with Kuttichathan. Bhuvaneswari is honoured as the mother of the Devasthanam. The present head of the temple is Dr Unni Damodaran, in a priestly line that the temple traces from Velumuthappan Swamy through Velukutty Swamy and Damodaran Swamy.

The origin story told at the temple centres on Velumuthappan Swamy. After penance directed to Goddess Bhuvaneswari, he is said to have been instructed to install an idol of Vishnumaya for the protection of Peringottukara. One account says the idol was found in the waters of the Triprayar River and then consecrated at this site. The temple keeps his memory inside the Kushikalpam, and during the annual festival his idol is brought out with the idol of Vishnumaya. A large terracotta group of Shiva, Parvati, and Vishnumaya stands at the entrance and marks the compound for visitors arriving by the village road.

Daily worship is organised around morning and evening darshan and a noon observance that the temple holds throughout the year. Listings commonly give the premises as open from about 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Devasthanam streams darshan from about 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. At noon, devotees attend Arulvakku, in which the deity is understood to appear through the priest and hear problems placed before him. The temple asks visitors to book this noon darshan at least a day ahead. People who cannot travel may send their name, birth details, and a short account of the matter to the office, and the priest places it during the noon rite. The Devasthanam states that devotees of any caste or religion may attend. Offerings and sevas are chosen with the office, and prasadam can be sent to those who request a pooja from a distance. Timings and the list of sevas change on festival days, so the current arrangement should be confirmed by phone before a visit.

The principal annual festival is Thiravellattu, also written Thiruvellattu, observed as the birthday of Lord Vishnumaya. It lasts nine days. The idols of Vishnumaya and of Velumuthappan are taken in procession, special poojas and homams are performed, and the temple says the date of the next festival is indicated during the divine dance on this occasion. Kalamezhuthupattu, the drawing of the deity’s form on the floor, is held around the Malayalam months connected with Mandala worship, including Karkidakam and Vrishchikam, with related rites in Midhunam and Thulam. Devotees take a little dust from the kalam for household worship. After Thiravellattu, Thottampattu is sung in praise of Bhuvaneswari, with a kalamezhuthu and a procession accompanied by traditional drums.

Peringottukara lies south-west of Thrissur town, in reach of Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple, about 4 km away, and of the coastal belt toward Nattika. Buses run from Sakthan Thampuran Bus Stand in Thrissur to Peringottukara, and the local stop is a short walk from the temple. The Devasthanam can arrange a taxi from Thrissur or from Cochin International Airport and offers rooms in its guest house or at the nearby palace hotel. Because several Vishnumaya temples stand in this village, visitors should follow the map pin for Peringottukara Devasthanam on the Kanjany–Peringottukara Road.

A visit is a darshan of Sree Vishnumaya, with the noon oracle, Bhuvaneswari worship, and the nine-day Thiravellattu as its main public forms. Anyone planning a pooja, a noon appointment, or a festival day should check the day’s arrangements with the temple office.
