About this place

Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala and a significant biodiversity destination located near Peechi in Thrissur district. Established in 1958, it is the second-oldest wildlife sanctuary in the state and was created to conserve the rich tropical forest ecosystems of the Western Ghats. Covering an area of around 125 square kilometres, the sanctuary forms part of the Palappilli–Nelliampathi forest landscape and lies in the catchment areas of the Peechi and Vazhani reservoirs. The northern boundary of the sanctuary is connected with the Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary, making this region an important ecological zone for wildlife conservation in central Kerala. The sanctuary is known for its lush evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, rolling hills, streams, reservoirs, and diverse plant life. Located within the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including elephants, deer, wild boars, gaur, various reptiles, butterflies, and numerous resident and migratory bird species. The forest area is also rich in medicinal plants, orchids, teak, rosewood, and other native tropical vegetation, making it an important centre for biodiversity research and conservation. Apart from wildlife conservation, the sanctuary is a popular eco-tourism destination near Thrissur, attracting nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, and travellers looking for a peaceful forest experience. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the Peechi and Vazhani reservoirs, nature-based activities, forest exploration, and nearby attractions such as Peechi Dam. Ponmudi peak, located within the sanctuary area, offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and forest landscapes. The Peechi region is also important for water conservation, as the reservoirs support drinking water requirements and maintain the ecological balance of the surrounding forests. The best time to visit Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is generally from October to March when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Visitors should follow Kerala Forest Department guidelines, as access to certain forest areas and activities may be regulated. Located about 20 km from Thrissur city, the sanctuary is easily accessible by road. The nearest railway station is Thrissur Railway Station, approximately 20 km away, while Cochin International Airport is around 95–100 km away. Kerala RTC and private buses connect Thrissur with Peechi and nearby areas.
