About this place
Pattazhy Devi Temple is a prominent Hindu shrine in Pattazhy village of Pathanapuram taluk, Kollam district, and is administered as Pattazhy Devaswom under the Travancore Devaswom Board. Dedicated to Pattazhy Devi, the temple is an important centre of worship in the eastern part of Kollam and is closely associated with the religious and cultural life of the surrounding communities. The temple complex hosts major annual observances, including the Kumbha Thiruvathira and Meena Thiruvathira festivals, when the shrine becomes a focus of devotional rituals, processions and cultural programmes. The Meena Thiruvathira celebrations are particularly associated with the ceremonial procession of the deity's Ponnin Thirumudi, while traditional observances and community participation form an important part of the festival atmosphere. Recent festival programmes have included devotional recitals, Sopana Sangeetham, Nadaswaram, classical music, Ottanthullal, dance performances, Kathakali and other cultural presentations. Pattazhy's temple traditions also include offerings and community-oriented practices such as annadanam, reflecting the role of the shrine beyond individual worship. The temple is situated within a rural landscape of settlements and greenery characteristic of eastern Kollam, with the wider Pattazhy area forming part of Pathanapuram taluk. The term Koothambalam refers generally to the traditional temple theatre spaces of Kerala, which were historically associated with performances such as Koodiyattam, Koothu and Nangyar Koothu. Such structures have a distinctive architectural and ritual significance in Kerala temple culture, with their design intended to support intimate communication between performers and spectators. At Pattazhy, however, the temple itself and its documented festivals and rituals are the principal features of cultural interest. Visitors can therefore experience the shrine as a living religious institution where customary worship, festival traditions and community participation continue to shape the cultural landscape. Photography, access to particular areas and participation in rituals may be subject to temple rules. As with other active places of worship, visitors should respect ongoing ceremonies, maintain appropriate conduct and follow directions issued by temple authorities. Pattazhy Devi Temple offers a meaningful glimpse into Kerala's living temple traditions, where faith, seasonal festivals, performing arts and community practices remain closely connected.
