About this event
Parichamuttukali is a distinctive Christian folk performance tradition of Kerala that combines group dance, rhythmic movement and stylised martial actions with swords and shields. Closely associated with the Christian communities of Kerala, the art form bears a strong resemblance to Kalaripayattu and is traditionally performed by men who move in coordinated formations around a traditional lamp. The name refers to the shield, or paricha, and the characteristic bringing together or striking of the shields during the performance. Kerala Tourism describes Parichamuttukali as an art form that developed among Christian warriors in the 16th century and was traditionally presented during church feasts. The performance begins with a tribute to God and gradually builds in pace and intensity, with the team leader, known as the Asan, leading the songs and movements. Performers carry swords and shields and execute carefully coordinated steps while rhythmically bringing the shields together, producing one of the most recognisable sounds of the performance. The musical accompaniment is deliberately restrained in the traditional form: the Asan sings while the dancers respond in chorus, with elathalam and the rhythmic clashing of swords and shields providing the principal musical texture. Songs may praise Christian figures and saints such as St. George and St. Sebastian, reflecting the devotional character of the tradition. Performers traditionally wear simple costumes, including white garments and coloured wristbands, although contemporary presentations may adapt costumes to suit the venue or occasion. The movements draw upon the physical vocabulary of Kerala’s martial traditions, but Parichamuttukali is presented as a performing art rather than a combat exercise. Performances today can be encountered at church festivals, cultural programmes and community celebrations, as well as in organised presentations designed to preserve Kerala’s Christian folk heritage. A presentation at the Punalur Christian Youth Centre would provide an opportunity to experience this traditional art form within the cultural setting of Punalur, an important town in eastern Kollam district. The performance also demonstrates the broader cultural interaction visible in Kerala’s folk traditions, where indigenous performance and martial practices have been adapted into distinctive Hindu, Muslim and Christian forms. Through its combination of devotional singing, disciplined group movement and rhythmic sword-and-shield patterns, Parichamuttukali continues to preserve an important strand of Kerala’s Christian cultural heritage while remaining a visually and musically engaging folk performance for contemporary audiences.
