About this event

Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple Festival is closely associated with Thrissur Pooram, the celebrated annual temple festival held at the Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur during the Malayalam month of Medam, generally falling in April or May. Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple is one of the principal participating temples, with its Bhagavathy forming one of the two central Pooram groups alongside Thiruvambady Bhagavathy. The festival brings together elaborate temple rituals, processions, traditional percussion and richly decorated elephants, creating one of the defining cultural spectacles of Thrissur’s festival calendar. The Paramekkavu group’s Pooram includes a ceremonial procession from the temple towards the Vadakkumnathan Temple, accompanied by caparisoned elephants and traditional musical ensembles. One of the best-known features is the presentation of the Bhagavathy and her procession before the Vadakkumnathan Temple, followed by the celebrated percussion performances associated with the Pooram. The evening reaches a major climax during the Kudamattom, when the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady groups face each other with lines of decorated elephants and exchange colourful ceremonial umbrellas in a friendly display of artistic presentation and festival tradition. The Pooram programme also includes the renowned Ilanjithara Melam, a large traditional percussion ensemble featuring instruments such as chenda, ilathalam, kombu and kuzhal. Fireworks are another established component of Thrissur Pooram, although their timing and conduct are subject to official arrangements and safety regulations. The festival is deeply rooted in the religious and cultural traditions of Thrissur and reflects the city’s distinctive heritage of temple arts, percussion music, ritual processions and community participation. Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple itself is a major Devi shrine, with Devi Vaishnavy, regarded as an incarnation of Goddess Durga, as its principal deity. The Pooram provides an opportunity to experience the interaction of devotional ritual and performing arts that has made Thrissur an important centre of Kerala’s festival culture. Because the celebrations attract very large crowds, public areas around the temple and Pooram venues can become exceptionally busy, particularly during the principal processions, Kudamattom and fireworks. Festival dates follow the Malayalam calendar and change annually; for 2026, Thrissur Pooram was held on April 26, with the Pooram-related programme beginning earlier in the month.
