About this place
Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is a renowned protected wildlife reserve located in the Palakkad district of Kerala and extending into parts of Tamil Nadu, forming an integral part of the ecologically significant Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. Recognized for its exceptional wildlife diversity and well-preserved forest ecosystems, the reserve is one of the most important conservation areas in South India. Parambikulam was declared a tiger reserve under the Government of India’s Project Tiger initiative, aimed at protecting the endangered Bengal tiger and conserving critical wildlife habitats across the country. Covering an area of approximately 643 square kilometers, the reserve consists of dense tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests that support an extraordinary range of plant and animal species. The rich forest cover, undisturbed habitats, and diverse ecosystems make Parambikulam Tiger Reserve an ideal environment for wildlife conservation and ecological research. The reserve also plays a crucial role as a wildlife corridor connecting several major protected areas of the Western Ghats, including the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Silent Valley National Park, and Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. This ecological connectivity allows wildlife species to move freely across forest landscapes, which is essential for maintaining genetic diversity and ensuring the long-term survival of many species. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is particularly known for its rich biodiversity, with the forests providing habitat for iconic wildlife such as tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, wild boars, and Nilgiri langurs. The reserve is also home to numerous species of reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and insects, along with a wide variety of endemic and migratory bird species that thrive in the diverse forest ecosystems of the Western Ghats. In addition to its wildlife, the reserve contains valuable forest resources, including rare medicinal plants and ancient tree species such as the famous Kannimara teak, one of the oldest and largest teak trees in Asia. The region’s rivers, reservoirs, and streams further enhance the ecological richness of the landscape, supporting both wildlife and surrounding communities. Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is also recognized for its successful community-based conservation programs that involve local tribal communities in sustainable forest management and eco-tourism initiatives. Today, the reserve stands as a model for wildlife protection and biodiversity conservation in India, attracting nature enthusiasts, wildlife researchers, and eco-tourists who wish to experience the pristine forests and diverse wildlife of the Western Ghats while supporting responsible conservation efforts in the Palakkad region.
