## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Muziris Heritage Walk offers an opportunity to explore the layered history of one of Kerala’s most important ancient maritime regions, whose heritage landscape extends across parts of present-day Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. Muziris is traditionally identified with an ancient port that flourished on the Malabar Coast and maintained long-distance commercial connections with regions including the Roman world, Greece, China, Persia, and the Middle East. Rather than representing a single archaeological monument, the Muziris heritage landscape comprises a network of archaeological sites, museums, historic buildings, religious monuments, traditional settlements, and cultural institutions that together illuminate centuries of trade and cultural interaction. The heritage-walk programme developed by the Muziris Heritage Project is designed as an interpretive learning experience, tracing important sites and encouraging visitors to understand both tangible and intangible aspects of the region’s history. Depending on the programme, the route can include sites such as Cheraman Parambu, Kottappuram Fort, Paliam Kovilakam and Paliam Nalukettu, as well as the historic Jewish synagogues at Paravur and Chendamangalam. The heritage landscape also encompasses churches, mosques, temples, cemeteries, traditional houses, markets, and other reminders of the communities that developed around the region’s trading networks. At Cheraman Parambu, archaeological excavations have revealed foundations, pottery, beads, bangles, metal implements, and other material remains, while the synagogues and associated museums preserve important evidence of Kerala’s Jewish heritage. The area is particularly notable for its religious and cultural diversity: near Kottayil Kovilakam, a church, temple, mosque, and synagogue stand within a relatively compact area, illustrating the region’s long history of coexistence and interaction. Interpretive displays, museums, local heritage sites, and cultural programmes add context to the physical remains, helping visitors understand how commerce, migration, religion, craftsmanship, and local traditions shaped the Muziris region over many centuries. The experience is therefore best understood as a heritage exploration rather than a conventional single-site walking tour, with individual routes and programmes varying according to the sites included. For travellers interested in archaeology, maritime history, religious heritage, architecture, and Kerala’s multicultural past, the Muziris heritage landscape provides a rich introduction to the historical connections that helped shape the region.
