About this place
Palaruvi Waterfalls is a scenic natural attraction in Aryankavu, in the eastern part of Kollam district, where water descends through the forested landscape from a height of about 300 feet. The name Palaruvi literally means “stream of milk,” referring to the white, frothy appearance of the falling water as it cascades over the rocks. Surrounded by wooded hills and rocky terrain, the waterfall forms part of the Western Ghats landscape and is one of Kollam’s well-known nature destinations. The journey towards the waterfall passes through tropical forest, adding to the character of the experience and offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate the vegetation and natural surroundings of the region. Palaruvi is a seasonal waterfall, with the flow generally becoming stronger during the monsoon, when the surrounding landscape is at its greenest. During periods of heavy rainfall, however, the increased water flow and slippery rocks require particular caution. The waterfall and its natural pool have traditionally attracted visitors seeking a cool dip, and bathing is permitted subject to prevailing conditions and local instructions. The area also has ecological significance because of its location within a forested Western Ghats environment, where streams, rocky habitats and tropical vegetation support a variety of plant and animal life. The name and appearance of the waterfall have made it an enduring feature of the local landscape, while its forest setting gives the destination a character distinct from more urban recreational sites. Visitors can enjoy the waterfall, surrounding scenery and forest atmosphere, while those interested in walking can explore the authorised routes leading towards the falls. Kerala’s ecotourism programme also lists a guided trekking activity at Palaruvi, involving a forest walk of approximately 3 kilometres; this is a separate organised activity requiring prior booking and is subject to conditions and availability. The destination is best approached as a nature and sightseeing experience rather than as a guaranteed adventure activity.
