## About this event

Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu’s Fort, is a historic landmark located in the heart of Palakkad city in Kerala and stands as one of the best-preserved forts in the state. Built in the 18th century by the powerful Mysore ruler Hyder Ali and later strengthened by his son Tipu Sultan, the fort played a crucial role in the military and political history of the region. Palakkad’s strategic location near the Palakkad Gap, a natural mountain pass in the Western Ghats connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu, made the area extremely important for trade routes and military movements. Recognizing this strategic advantage, Hyder Ali constructed the fort as a defensive stronghold to control the gateway between the Malabar Coast and the interior regions of South India. The fort later became an important military base for Tipu Sultan during his campaigns and conflicts with the British East India Company. Throughout the late 18th century, the fort witnessed several battles and power struggles between the Mysore rulers and the British forces as both sides sought to control the strategically significant Palakkad Gap. The structure of Palakkad Fort reflects strong military architecture designed for defense and surveillance. Built using massive laterite blocks and granite, the fort features thick defensive walls, bastions, and a wide moat surrounding the structure that once served as protection against enemy attacks. Inside the fort complex, visitors can find open grounds, remnants of old structures, and historical buildings that reflect the fort’s long military history. The spacious grounds and well-preserved architecture provide a glimpse into the strategic planning and construction techniques used during the Mysore rule in South India. Today, Palakkad Fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and has become one of the most important historical and tourist attractions in the Palakkad district. The surrounding gardens and open spaces make the area a peaceful recreational spot for visitors while preserving its historical character. Tourists, history enthusiasts, and students frequently visit the site to explore its architecture and learn about the region’s colonial and pre-colonial history. As a symbol of Kerala’s rich historical heritage, Palakkad Fort continues to stand as a reminder of the military strategies, political conflicts, and cultural interactions that shaped the history of the Malabar region and the Western Ghats during the 18th century.
