About this event
Padinharekkara Athiyal Tharavadu Devasthanam Theyyam Festival is a traditional annual Theyyam and Kaliyattam observance held at the family-maintained shrine of Padinharekkara Athiyal Tharavadu in Kanhangad, Kasaragod district. The festival is held for two days during the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, traditionally on Vrischikam 23 and 24, corresponding to December 8 and 9. The shrine is associated with several Theyyam traditions, including Monthi Kolam, Pannikulathu Chamundi and Gulikan, each representing distinct figures within the ritual and sacred traditions of northern Kerala. During the festival, performers assume the forms of deities and supernatural beings through elaborate costumes, facial and body decoration, ritual movements and traditional musical accompaniment. Theyyam is not simply a staged performance but a living ritual tradition in which the performer becomes the focus of worship and devotees seek blessings, protection and spiritual guidance. Monthi Kolam, also known as Nellu Kuthi Pothi, is among the distinctive ritual forms associated with the shrine and is connected with the wider sacred traditions of Kasaragod and Kannur. Gulikan is another important Theyyam figure traditionally worshipped in many tharavadu shrines of northern Kerala. The performances take place within the sacred precincts of the tharavadu, where ritual spaces, small shrines and surrounding trees form part of the traditional setting. Such family shrines preserve localized forms of worship and oral traditions that have been transmitted through generations. The annual Kaliyattam therefore serves both a religious purpose for the families and devotees connected with the shrine and a cultural role in sustaining the region’s ritual heritage. Visitors who attend should approach the ceremonies as religious observances rather than as conventional stage performances and follow the customs of the shrine and instructions given by those conducting the rituals. The intimate setting of a tharavadu festival also provides an opportunity to observe the close relationship between Theyyam, family worship, local mythology and community life that characterizes the ritual culture of northern Kerala. With its annual observance, distinctive Theyyam forms and connection to the ancestral traditions of a Kasaragod tharavadu, the Padinharekkara Athiyal festival represents an important example of Kerala’s living ritual heritage.
