## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Ochira Kali is an annual martial and cultural festival held at the Oachira Parabrahma Temple in Kollam district, Kerala, on the first and second days of the Malayalam month of Mithunam, generally falling in June. The festival commemorates the historic Battle of Kayamkulam associated with Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, and the Raja of Kayamkulam, and transforms the paddy fields adjoining the temple into a traditional performance space known as Padanilam, or battlefield. Participants representing localities known as karas form two groups and take part in a symbolic mock combat that recalls the martial practices of an earlier era. The action takes place in waterlogged fields, where participants wield sticks rather than swords and splash muddy water at one another to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional battlefield. The rhythmic beats of drums and the enthusiastic participation of spectators contribute to the energetic character of the occasion. The festival is notable not simply for its martial display but also for the strong community involvement surrounding it. The Kollam district administration describes the event as an age-old fencing exercise conducted under the leadership of elder kalari asans, with participants drawn from the two karas on either side of Oachira. In this way, Ochira Kali preserves elements of Kerala’s traditional martial heritage while maintaining its connection with local history and community identity. The setting itself is distinctive because Oachira Parabrahma Temple differs markedly from conventional temples: it has no enclosed sanctum or conventional idol, and worship centres on the concept of Parabrahma, or universal consciousness. The open and unstructured character of the temple grounds complements the festival’s outdoor traditions. Ochira Kali is therefore closely tied to the cultural landscape of Oachira, where the temple, Padanilam and surrounding communities together form the setting for this annual observance. The festival attracts large numbers of spectators and remains one of Kollam’s notable traditional celebrations. For visitors, it offers an opportunity to witness a living cultural practice in which historical memory, martial tradition and community participation come together in an open rural setting. The 2026 edition is scheduled for 15 and 16 June, corresponding to the first two days of Mithunam.
