DESCRIPTION:Ochira Kali is an annual martial and cultural festival held at
the Oachira Parabrahma Temple in Kollam district\, Kerala\, on the first a
nd second days of the Malayalam month of Mithunam\, generally falling in J
une. The festival commemorates the historic Battle of Kayamkulam associate
d with Marthanda Varma\, the Maharaja of Travancore\, and the Raja of Kaya
mkulam\, and transforms the paddy fields adjoining the temple into a tradi
tional performance space known as Padanilam\, or battlefield. Participants
representing localities known as karas form two groups and take part in a
symbolic mock combat that recalls the martial practices of an earlier era
. The action takes place in waterlogged fields\, where participants wield
sticks rather than swords and splash muddy water at one another to recreat
e the atmosphere of a traditional battlefield. The rhythmic beats of drums
and the enthusiastic participation of spectators contribute to the energe
tic character of the occasion. The festival is notable not simply for its
martial display but also for the strong community involvement surrounding
it. The Kollam district administration describes the event as an age-old f
encing exercise conducted under the leadership of elder kalari asans\, wit
h participants drawn from the two karas on either side of Oachira. In this
way\, Ochira Kali preserves elements of Kerala’s traditional martial he
ritage while maintaining its connection with local history and community i
dentity. The setting itself is distinctive…\n\nEvent page: https://app.e
