About this event

St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church at Niranam, popularly known as Niranam Valiyapally, is one of Kerala’s most historically significant Christian churches and an important pilgrimage centre associated with the St. Thomas Christian tradition. According to Kerala Christian tradition, the church was established by St. Thomas the Apostle in AD 54 and is counted among the Ezhara Pallikal, or the seven and a half churches traditionally associated with his missionary activities in Kerala. Kerala Tourism notes that the historical details of St. Thomas’s visit remain a matter of debate among historians, while the tradition of his arrival and the establishment of early Christian communities continues to be an important part of Kerala’s religious heritage. Niranam was an ancient settlement associated with Thrikapaleswaram, and the church’s history is closely connected with the early Christian communities that developed along Kerala’s historic trading and riverine routes. The present church is the fourth structure on the site. Kerala Tourism records that the earlier church was reconstructed in 1259 and that the present building was constructed in 1912. An inscription connected with the 1259 renovation survives as an important historical feature, while the church is also noted for its traditional architecture, old stonework, wall paintings and heritage objects. Niranam Valiyapally has played an important role in the history of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and was an important ecclesiastical centre for centuries. The church is also associated with the memory of Mar Thoma II and Mar Thoma V, whose mortal remains are buried there. Its religious calendar includes several major annual observances. The feast of St. Thomas is celebrated on December 21, the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, known locally as Vaangipu Perunnal, is observed on August 15, and the feasts of Mar Thoma II and Mar Thoma V are celebrated together on May 10. These occasions feature religious services, processions, Holy Qurbana and community gatherings. The church’s enduring significance lies in the way its traditions connect Kerala’s ancient Christian heritage with the continuing religious life of the Malankara Orthodox community. For pilgrims, the site is a place of worship and devotion; for visitors interested in history and culture, it provides an opportunity to explore one of the region’s most important surviving landmarks associated with the early Christian tradition in Kerala.
