St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church, popularly known as Niranam Valiya Pally, is one of the oldest and most significant Christian pilgrimage sites in Kerala, located in the historic village of Niranam near Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta district. Traditionally believed to have been founded by St. Thomas the Apostle in AD 54, the church is one of the revered Ezhara Pallikal (Seven and a Half Churches) established during his missionary journey to India, making it a destination of immense religious, historical, and cultural importance. Surrounded by the tranquil landscapes of the Pamba River basin, the church is renowned for its traditional Kerala-style architecture, ancient granite crosses, historic relics, beautifully preserved interiors, and centuries-old Christian heritage. Over the years, the church has undergone several renovations while preserving its spiritual legacy and historical significance, attracting pilgrims, historians, photographers, and cultural travellers from across India and abroad. Visitors can attend daily prayers, Holy Qurbana, and major annual feasts, especially the Feast of St. Thomas and the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, which draw thousands of devotees every year. The peaceful atmosphere, rich traditions, and proximity to other heritage landmarks, including the ancient Thrikkapaleeswaram Shiva Temple, reflect the region's long-standing cultural harmony. Easily accessible from Thiruvalla, the church offers a meaningful experience for those interested in Kerala's Christian heritage, religious tourism, architecture, and history. Its unique blend of spirituality, heritage, and historical significance makes St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church one of the must-visit heritage churches in Kerala and an important stop on the St. Thomas Christian pilgrimage trail.
