About this place

Conolly’s Plot is a historically significant teak plantation in Vadapuram, about 2 kilometres from Nilambur town in Malappuram district, Kerala, and is recognised by Kerala Tourism as the world’s oldest teak plantation. Established in 1846 under the direction of H.V. Conolly, the then Collector of Malabar, with planting carried out by Chathu Menon, the plantation represents an important chapter in the development of systematic forest management in India. Originally extending across approximately 1,500 acres, the preserved area of Conolly’s Plot is now around 5.7 acres, with the remaining plantation maintained as an important forestry heritage site by the Kerala Forest Department. Kerala Tourism notes that part of the original plantation was harvested during the Second World War to meet timber requirements, while the surviving section continues to preserve the historical character of Nilambur’s teak landscape. The plantation is situated in a naturally attractive setting bordered by the Chaliyar and Kurinjipuzha rivers, with dense forest surrounding other sides of the site. The Kurinjipuzha joins the Chaliyar near the plantation, adding a riverine element to the visitor experience and creating a combination of mature teak trees, flowing water and green forest scenery. One of the most notable features associated with Conolly’s Plot is Kannimari, an exceptionally old teak tree preserved within the plantation. The site also contains the remains of Chathu Menon, whose role in establishing the plantation forms an important part of its forestry history. Reaching the plantation traditionally involves crossing a hanging bridge over the Chaliyar River, providing visitors with an additional scenic element before entering the teak grove. Kerala Tourism describes the short walk through the forest department area and across the bridge as part of the experience of visiting Conolly’s Plot. The plantation is therefore more than a collection of old trees; it functions as a living record of Kerala’s forestry heritage and the historical importance of teak as a valuable timber species. Nilambur itself is closely associated with teak cultivation, and the surrounding region contains several attractions connected with forests and timber, including the Nilambur Teak Museum and Nedumkayam Rainforest. The Teak Museum provides historical, scientific and aesthetic information about teak, while Nedumkayam offers a contrasting experience of the region’s natural forest and biodiversity. This makes Conolly’s Plot particularly suitable for travellers interested in nature tourism, environmental history, forestry, photography and cultural heritage. The mature teak trees create a shaded landscape that can be explored at a leisurely pace, while the nearby river and hanging bridge provide opportunities for landscape photography. Visitors interested in Kerala’s natural heritage can also use a trip to Conolly’s Plot as an introduction to the wider Nilambur forest landscape, which combines plantations, natural forests, rivers and waterfalls. The destination is relatively close to Nilambur town, making it more accessible than some of the deeper forest attractions in the region. Kerala Tourism lists Nilambur Railway Station as the nearest railway connection, while the nearest airport is Calicut International Airport. As a heritage plantation maintained within a forest environment, visitors should respect the site’s trees and natural surroundings, remain within permitted areas and avoid damaging vegetation or leaving waste behind. The river and hanging bridge should also be approached with appropriate caution, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when water levels and surrounding surfaces may change. Weather can influence the experience considerably: the monsoon season brings greener surroundings and increased river flow, while relatively drier months can be more convenient for walking and outdoor sightseeing. Conolly’s Plot can be combined with other Nilambur attractions to create a broader Kerala travel itinerary focused on teak, forests, waterfalls and local heritage. For travellers exploring Malappuram tourism, the plantation offers a distinctive experience because its importance comes from both its natural appearance and its documented place in the history of Indian forestry. The combination of historic teak trees, the Chaliyar and Kurinjipuzha rivers, the hanging bridge and the legacy of Chathu Menon and H.V. Conolly makes Conolly’s Plot one of the most notable nature and heritage attractions in Nilambur, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience a living piece of Kerala’s forestry history within a peaceful green landscape.
