## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Nilambur Pattu Utsavam is the celebrated six-day annual festival of the Vettakkorumakan Temple at Nilambur Kovilakam in Malappuram district, a distinctive tradition that brings together religious observance, tribal cultural heritage and the historical legacy of Nilambur. The temple is dedicated to Vettakkorumakan, regarded in local tradition as the son of Lord Shiva in his Kirata, or hunter, form. The festival is held in the Malayalam month of Dhanu, corresponding to December–January, and is particularly known for the performance of devotional songs, or Pattu, by members of the Nilambur royal family and tribal communities. The tradition is closely associated with the cultural history of the Nilambur Kovilakam and preserves a form of ritual music rooted in the region’s tribal heritage. During the festival, hymns in praise of Vettakkorumakan are performed as part of the observances, while the temple and its surroundings become a setting for a range of religious and cultural activities. Traditional elements associated with the celebration include tribal songs, Komaram Thullal, percussion and other temple musical performances, cultural programmes, village-fair activities and ceremonial elephant processions. Another important feature is Sarvani Sadya, a communal feast traditionally associated with the festival and offered to members of the tribal communities. The participation of tribal communities is central to the character of Nilambur Pattu Utsavam, reflecting the long-standing cultural relationship between the Nilambur Kovilakam and the communities of the surrounding forest region. The festival also provides an opportunity to experience the distinctive devotional traditions associated with Vettakkorumakan worship in northern Kerala, where the deity has a strong presence in local religious culture. With its combination of ritual singing, community participation and traditional cultural practices, the festival forms an important part of Nilambur’s heritage and continues to connect contemporary celebrations with the region’s royal, tribal and devotional traditions.
