About this place

Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Kerala's most celebrated protected forest destinations, located near Kattakkada in Thiruvananthapuram district at the southern foothills of the Western Ghats. Spread across a vast expanse of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests, the sanctuary forms part of the internationally recognized Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. Established in 1958, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is named after the scenic Neyyar River, which flows through the reserve and feeds the picturesque Neyyar Dam reservoir, creating one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in southern Kerala. The tranquil reservoir, surrounded by forested hills, offers spectacular views and opportunities for boating, nature photography, and peaceful sightseeing. The sanctuary supports a rich variety of wildlife, including Asian elephants, sambar deer, barking deer, wild boar, Nilgiri langurs, bonnet macaques, reptiles, butterflies, and numerous resident and migratory bird species, making it a rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers, although sightings of larger mammals depend on natural conditions. Among its most popular attractions are the Lion Safari Park, the Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre, and the Elephant Rehabilitation Centre, where visitors can learn about wildlife conservation and rehabilitation efforts. Adventure seekers can also enjoy guided trekking programs organized by the Kerala Forest Department, with trails leading through pristine forests to scenic viewpoints and nearby peaks, including routes connected with the Agasthyamala landscape, subject to seasonal regulations and permits. The sanctuary's remarkable combination of forests, mountains, rivers, and reservoirs creates an ideal environment for eco-tourism, environmental education, and outdoor recreation. Easily accessible from Thiruvananthapuram, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary can be combined with visits to Neyyar Dam, nearby viewpoints, and other attractions in the Western Ghats, making it one of the best destinations for experiencing Kerala's rich natural heritage. Whether you are interested in wildlife, birdwatching, trekking, boating, or simply enjoying the serenity of nature, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers an unforgettable eco-tourism experience in southern Kerala.
