About this event
Held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of Kerala’s best-known traditional sporting and cultural events, centred on the state’s distinctive chundan vallams, or snake boats. The race traces its origins to the visit of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to Alappuzha in December 1952. A boat race was organised in his honour during the visit, and Nehru was so impressed by the spectacle that he joined the winning Nadubhagam Chundan on its return journey. After returning to Delhi, he sent a silver trophy bearing his signature, and the annual competition came to be known as the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The first official competition for the trophy was held in 1954 at Kainakari Meenappilli, before Punnamada was selected as the permanent venue following difficult conditions at the earlier location. The racecourse at Punnamada is roughly 1,380 metres long, providing a dedicated water track for the principal competitions. The highlight is the chundan vallam race, in which long, narrow traditional boats are propelled by large teams of rowers working in close coordination. Many of these boats exceed 100 feet in length and carry more than a hundred rowers, with their movements coordinated through rhythmic boat songs, chants and percussion. The sight of the boats advancing together through the water reflects the teamwork and collective discipline that are central to Kerala’s boat-racing tradition. The main race is accompanied by other traditional boat categories and ceremonial activities, creating a broader water festival around the competition. Punnamada and the surrounding backwaters become a gathering place for boat clubs, local communities, spectators and visitors during the event. The race also forms part of Kerala’s wider tradition of water-based festivals, in which boats have historically been closely connected with the social and economic life of the backwater region. Today, the Nehru Trophy combines sporting competition with cultural expression, bringing together traditional boat-building, rowing practices, music and community participation. The annual event is traditionally held in August and forms the opening race of Kerala Tourism’s Champions Boat League season. The 2026 Nehru Trophy Boat Race is scheduled for 22 August at Punnamada, Alappuzha. For visitors, the event offers an opportunity to witness one of Kerala’s most distinctive forms of traditional sport, where the precision of coordinated rowing, the long lines of the chundan vallams and the energy of the surrounding crowds create a vivid celebration of the state’s enduring relationship with its waterways.
