DESCRIPTION:Neelamperoor Padayani is an annual ritual festival held at the
Palli Bhagavathi Temple in Neelamperoor\, Alappuzha district\, and is one
of the distinctive Padayani traditions of central Kerala. The temple is de
dicated to Vanadurga and is traditionally believed to have a history of ar
ound 1\,700 years. Unlike many Padayani festivals held at Bhadrakali templ
es in other parts of central Travancore\, Neelamperoor Padayani is conduct
ed in the Malayalam month of Chingam\, usually during August or September\
, and forms part of the region’s Onam-season traditions. The celebration
s begin after the Thiruvonam asterism\, on Avittam\, and continue for 16 d
ays until the Pooram asterism\, regarded as the birthday of the Bhagavathi
. Padayani is a ritual theatre tradition combining music\, movement\, mask
s\, elaborate headgear and symbolic characters\, with its mythology tradit
ionally associated with the goddess Kali and her victory over the demon Da
rika. At Neelamperoor\, the festival has a distinctive sequence of rituals
and displays. The opening days include a symbolic visit to the Cheraman P
erumal monument\, followed by Kudapadayani\, in which umbrella-shaped flor
al decorations made from coconut-leaf stems are presented. Subsequent days
feature larger effigies made with natural plant materials\, while the fin
al phase is dominated by the spectacular Kettukazhcha. Huge swan effigies\
, known as Annam\, are brought as offerings to the goddess\, together with
representations of figures such as Bhima\, Ravana…\n\nEvent page: https
