DESCRIPTION:Nataka Kalari Festival reflects Kerala’s distinctive traditio
 n of theatre education\, experimentation\, and live performance. The term 
 “Nataka Kalari” is associated with a theatre-training movement that de
 veloped in Kerala during the 1960s\, particularly through the efforts of p
 laywright and theatre thinker G. Sankara Pillai and other practitioners wh
 o promoted practical approaches to theatre learning. The first Nataka Kala
 ri was conducted in 1967\, providing a setting where theatre could be expl
 ored through rehearsal\, performance\, and experimentation rather than bei
 ng approached only as literature. The movement encouraged learning in area
 s such as acting\, direction\, improvisation\, stagecraft\, lighting\, cos
 tume\, music\, and scenography\, with particular importance given to colle
 ctive performance and creative exploration. Kerala’s theatre-training tr
 adition subsequently contributed to the development of institutional theat
 re education\, including the establishment of the School of Drama and Fine
  Arts at the University of Calicut in 1977. This broader theatrical legacy
  provides an important cultural context for programmes associated with the
  Nataka Kalari tradition\, where performance and education come together.
