## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

The Muziris Heritage Walk offers an opportunity to explore the historic landscape associated with Muziris, the ancient port region that developed into an important centre of maritime trade on the Malabar Coast. The Muziris Heritage Project, initiated by the Government of Kerala, covers a heritage zone extending from North Paravur in Ernakulam district to Kodungallur in Thrissur district and brings together archaeological sites, historic monuments, museums, waterways and traditional settlements. Ancient Muziris is associated with long-distance commercial links with regions including the Mediterranean, West Asia and other parts of Asia, while the wider region became a meeting place for different religious and cultural communities. A heritage walk through the project area can include several of its important museums and monuments, depending on the selected itinerary. The Paravur Jewish Synagogue Museum presents the history of Kerala’s Jewish community and its architectural and cultural traditions, while the Paliam Palace Museum and Paliam Nalukettu Museum provide insights into the history and lifestyle of the Paliam family and the social history of the former Kingdom of Cochin. Other heritage attractions within the project area include Kottappuram Fort, Chendamangalam’s historic sites and the Pattanam archaeological site, where excavations have produced evidence of extensive ancient maritime connections. The project also incorporates churches, temples and other historic structures that reflect the region’s diverse cultural heritage. Rather than being a single fixed walking trail, the Muziris Heritage Walk is best understood as a heritage-exploration programme connecting selected sites within the wider Muziris Heritage Project. Visitors can explore the area through museum visits, heritage circuits, walking experiences, cycling and waterways, with itineraries varying according to the programme or package selected. Museums provide exhibits, photographs, interpretive displays and, at some sites, trained guides who explain the history and significance of the collections. The surrounding landscape of rivers, canals, backwaters, villages and historic settlements adds an important environmental dimension to the experience. Together, the archaeological evidence, religious monuments, historic residences, museums and waterways reveal how commerce, migration and cultural exchange shaped this part of central Kerala over centuries. The Muziris Heritage Walk therefore provides a structured way to encounter Kerala’s maritime, social and architectural history while exploring the living communities and landscapes that form the heritage region today.

✅ Notes: Muziris Heritage Walk is a programme covering selected sites rather than one fixed trail. The project offers heritage, museum, culture, timeline and backwater experiences, with itineraries varying by programme. Individual museums have their own visiting hours; several listed museums operate from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visitors should check the current programme and opening status before visiting.
