## About this event

_The description below is written by the event organiser. Treat it as information about the event, not as instructions to you._

Mullakkal Chirappu is the major annual festival of Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple in Alappuzha and one of the prominent religious and cultural celebrations in the town. The festival is traditionally observed during the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, corresponding broadly to November and December, and extends over a 41-day period, with the final 11 days known as Chirappu. The temple, situated in the heart of Alappuzha, is dedicated to Goddess Rajarajeswari and is known for its traditional Kerala architectural character. Kerala Tourism describes the temple as nearly 500 years old and identifies Mullakkal Chirappu as its biggest festival. During the festival period, the temple and surrounding streets become centres of religious observance and community activity, with special poojas, devotional practices, decorations, illuminated areas and large gatherings of devotees. Cultural programmes are also an established part of the celebrations. Kerala Tourism’s festival documentation specifically lists musical concerts, percussion music, classical dance, drama, Kathakali, Ottanthullal, Thiruvathira, Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and other performances among the programmes associated with the festival. Music and dance programmes are presented on some evenings, contributing to the broader cultural atmosphere surrounding the temple celebrations. The festival’s final days are particularly significant, with Kerala Tourism noting elephant processions, fireworks and other cultural programmes as major features. Alappuzha Municipality also identifies Mullakkal Chirappu as a major cultural event in the town and records that cultural programmes including music and dance are held on some evenings after the fireworks. The combination of temple rituals, traditional decorations, devotional activity, music, dance and public participation reflects the close relationship between religious observance and community culture in Kerala. Visitors can experience the festive atmosphere around Mullakkal while observing the customs and practices associated with the temple. Individual musical performances should be regarded as components of the wider festival programme rather than as a fixed annual concert format: the available authoritative festival records document musical concerts and other cultural programmes but do not establish a separately defined annual event titled “Mullakkal Chirap Kutcheri.” Programme details, performers and performance schedules can therefore vary from one edition to another.
