About this event

Mother of God Cathedral, locally known as Valiyapalli, is a historic Roman Catholic cathedral located on Convent Road near Mananchira and Beach Road in Kozhikode. It serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calicut and remains an important centre of Catholic worship in the Malabar region. The history of the church is closely associated with the early Portuguese presence in Kozhikode. Historical records cited by the Archdiocese of Calicut indicate that a church existed in the city in the early 16th century, while the present site has been associated with a church since the late 16th century. A major rebuilding was undertaken in 1724 following an agreement between the Zamorin and the Portuguese, and the church was subsequently developed with a vestry, belfry and porches. It became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Calicut in 1923. The cathedral is particularly noted for its distinctive architectural character, combining Gothic and Neo-Roman influences. Italian architects are credited with designing the structure, while Indian craftsmen contributed to its construction and decorative details. The façade features prominent towers, curved arches and other ornamental elements, while the entrance is distinguished by intricately carved wooden doors. Among the cathedral’s notable heritage features is an old portrait of St. Mary preserved inside the church. The adjoining cemetery also forms part of the site’s historical character and includes the tombstone associated with Pedro de Covilhany, identified in Kerala Tourism’s account as an early Catholic missionary connected with Kozhikode. The cathedral continues to function as an active place of worship, with regular Masses and devotional services conducted throughout the week. Its location in the heart of Kozhikode places it within the city’s historic urban landscape, close to several other cultural and religious landmarks. For visitors interested in Kerala’s Christian heritage, the cathedral offers an opportunity to explore the long historical connections between Kozhikode, the Portuguese presence on the Malabar Coast and the development of the Catholic community in the region
